DIY: felt animal ornaments

One boring summer day, I sat down in front of the television with a stack of felt and made a couple of puffy animals. I had sent one away as a birthday gift, but if a ribbon is added to the top of these felt creatures, they make cute ornaments, or little companions for your desk. These animals are easy to make! Grab your supplies and pop in your favorite Holiday movie!

What you will need:
felt in various colors
thread or embroidery floss
needle
fiberfill
pencil
scissors

optional:
clear glitter nail polish
ribbon
yarn

1. Trace and cut out two identical pieces of your animal shape in the color(s) of your choice, and cut it's parts (arms, legs, eyes, ears, etc.) in different colors.

2. Using contrasting thread or embroidery floss, hand stitch your animal's parts on its body. If you are using thread, double it up for extra strength. {Option: Paint glitter nail polish on your animal's parts for little sparkle.}

3. Stitch the two pieces of your animal body together, leaving a small opening. If you are making an animal with limbs sticking out, sandwich those pieces between the body pieces and stitch close. This goes the same if you are adding a ribbon to hang as an ornament.

4. Fill your animal up with fiberfill through the the opening. Use a tool, like a pencil or small crochet hook, to make sure those corners and small spaces get stuffed. Do not overstuff or else it's going to look warped and wonky.

5. Stitch the hole close. Add any features to your animal as you see fit. I drew an eye for my elephant with a black permanent marker.

There you have it! Your own handmade creature ornament! With a little imagination, you can make all sorts of animals. I'm sticking these along with my friends' Christmas presents! Whip up a few for those remaining bare spots on your Christmas tree, and make a few more to give away to friends!
